Victory and Progress at the Bargaining Table
Brothers & Sisters,
A lot has been happening at Local 40 over the last few months.
We have been hard at work alongside our partner unions in the Entertainment Union Coalition to make sure lawmakers hear directly from organized labor about the importance of protecting California’s film and television industry through SB 122. Keeping production here in California means protecting good union jobs, supporting our members and their families, and preserving an industry that generations of union workers helped build.
At the same time, we have been busy at the bargaining table.
Our members working under the Inside Construction Agreement recently ratified a new five-year agreement with over an 85% Yes vote. This new agreement provides PTO for the first time ever and significant wage increases that will continue to keep our members at the highest on-the-check wage rate for electricians working under an Inside Construction Agreement in Southern California, by nearly 10 percent.
We are also continuing negotiations with our Special Effects Technicians. While we have not been able to close out those negotiations yet, we have made progress and remain optimistic that we can reach an agreement we can confidently recommend to the membership.
What Labor Day Represents
With Labor Day right around the corner, it is worth remembering what this holiday represents.
Labor Day is more than firing up the barbecue and enjoying a three-day weekend. The wages we earn, the healthcare that protects our families, our retirement plans, and the working conditions we rely on were fought for by generations of working people who organized and united.
That fight continues today. Whether we are negotiating stronger agreements, protecting good union jobs in California’s entertainment industry, or enforcing the standards our members have earned, none of it happens by accident. It happens because union members continue to stand together.
As we head into Labor Day weekend, I hope everyone takes a moment to appreciate what union membership has made possible for our families and remembers that those gains must continue to be protected for the next generation.
Local 40 Picnic Survey
That same sense of solidarity should extend beyond the jobsite, which is why we want to create more opportunities for our members and families to spend time together.
Please take a few minutes to complete our Local 40 Picnic Survey and help us build an event that reflects what our members and families actually want.
