March 2025 – Dues Deduction Survey Update – Your Voice Matters
Brothers and Sisters,
As union members, we hold the power to shape the direction of our Local through the democratic process. Members speaking up, and making their voices heard is one of the core values of the labor movement, and it is necessary for our success. It is an active and engaged membership that will continue to maintain the strength of our union and ensure our Local is acting on the will of the membership.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to participate in the recent dues deduction survey. Your input is invaluable, and we want to share that nearly 70% of you prefer to keep the current system in place. While this may be the case today, the added language in the agreement will remain and continue to give our members the freedom to choose in the future should there be a change of heart or new considerations. For now, nothing about our dues structure will change, and we will continue to collect dues as we have for the last 30 years.
Your feedback guides us as we move forward, but it’s important to remember that the process of progress doesn’t stop here. At times, it’s necessary to explore new ideas, even if the majority doesn’t immediately embrace them. We cannot be afraid to explore opportunity, and to leave well enough alone is not the path to success. Our failures should not be due to a lack of effort. Babe Ruth famously said, “Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game”.
We want to ensure that every member’s voice is considered, and we remain committed to making decisions that strengthen our Local and serve the best interests of all. As always, we encourage you to stay engaged and involved in shaping the future of our union.
Steward Training
Lastly, we are currently planning a steward training class for the week of May 19th. Stepping up to be a shop steward is one of the most critical positions in our union and are the backbone of our Local. Our stewards are the first line of defense for members, they help enforce our contracts, address grievances, and ensure that workplace rights are upheld. This role requires knowledge of union principles, the contract, and how to represent your fellow workers.
The training will equip stewards with the tools and knowledge needed to be a steward. If you’re already serving as a shop steward, this training will help sharpen your skills and deepen your knowledge. If you’re considering stepping into this role, this is a great chance to get started and learn how you can make a difference.
If you’re interested in attending, please reach out to us so we can reserve your spot.
In Solidarity,
Stephan Davis
Business Manager
Financial Secretary
